Жанр развлекательного представления, распространенный в середине XIX века. В нем выступали загримированные под негров ["blackface"] белые актеры и музыканты, которые пели под банджо [ banjo], танцевали, показывали акробатические номера и разыгрывали веселые сценки из негритянской жизни Юга (на негритянском диалекте). Родоначальником жанра считается "Папаша" Райс [ Rice, Thomas Dartmouth], наибольшим успехом пользовались труппы Дана Эмметта ("Вирджинские менестрели") [Emmett, Dan] и Эдвина Кристи [Christy, Edwin]. Некоторые композиторы, в том числе С. Фостер [ Foster, Stephen Collins], писали музыку специально для этих шоу.
